Recognised Experience for Qualification (REQ)

Recognised Experience for Qualification (REQ) is a defined period of professional development, undertaken by a student in an appropriate work environment that is relevant to the work of a professional accountant. The experience should enable the student's to acquire, develop and demonstrate professional skills and competencies requisite for eligibility to associate membership.

Shortly after registering with Chartered Accountants Ireland, a member of the Training Support Unit will contact you in relation to professional development and to assist both student and mentor in the planning, recording and review of the (REQ) on the web-based tool, the CA Diary of Professional Development.

In order to qualify as a Chartered Accountant, students joining the Elevation Programme are not required to enter into the traditional Training Contract model which requires them to complete their professional studies simultaneously with their relevant experience under a training contract period. The Elevation Programme will facilitate students who wish to:

  • secure relevant experience with an employer of their choice. The Institute will however, assess the organisation and work experience with student and mentor in order to have the experience recognised for admission to associate membership
  • have the flexibility to move between employers as their interest and circumstances change; and
  • complete all their examinations, if they wish, prior to acquiring the (REQ)
    Length of Experience

Length of Experience

The amount of experience required is dependent on your educational background:

  • Recognised Masters in Accounting: 3 years
  • Undergraduate degrees: 3.5 years
  • Accounting Technician (ATI) qualification: 4 years

From the date of registration, Elevation Programme students have an 8 year time frame in which to secure their relevant work experience.
